Your First Visit
A step-by-step walkthrough of your visit at Visions Optique & Eyecare — so you arrive relaxed and know exactly what's ahead.
Our front desk team greets you, confirms your insurance information, and ensures your patient intake form is complete. New patients can save time by completing the form online before their visit via the link in our announcement bar.
Your doctor or technician reviews your personal health history, current medications, family eye history, and any symptoms or concerns you'd like to discuss. This helps us tailor the exam to your specific needs and risk factors.
Automated instruments measure your current prescription, pupil reactions, color vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision. Digital retinal photography gives your doctor a baseline image of your retina, optic nerve, and macula — captured quickly and comfortably without dilation in most cases.
Your doctor performs the full refraction (the "one or two?" prescription refinement), evaluates your binocular vision and eye muscle function, and examines the internal and external structures of your eyes using a high-magnification slit lamp. This is the medical evaluation that distinguishes a comprehensive exam from a basic vision screening.
Intraocular pressure is measured with a brief puff of air — non-contact, no drops required. Your doctor evaluates the health of your optic nerve and reviews your retinal images. If a more complete peripheral view is needed, dilation may be recommended and takes 20–30 minutes to take effect.
Your doctor explains all findings in plain language, reviews your prescription, and answers every question. If any conditions require monitoring or treatment, a clear plan is outlined. No clinical jargon — you leave knowing exactly what was found and what to do next.
If a new prescription is needed, our opticians help you choose from 800+ designer frames or contact lens options that match your prescription, lifestyle, and preferences. Prescription lenses can often be completed in our in-house lab within the hour — so you may be able to leave with new glasses the same day.
Common Questions
A comprehensive exam at Visions Optique & Eyecare typically takes 20 to 30 minutes from check-in to checkout. New patients should plan for 30 minutes, especially if contact lens fitting is included. We never rush — every part of the exam is thorough and unhurried. Please arrive 10 minutes early if it's your first visit.
Please bring your current glasses or contact lenses (including the box or prescription if you have it), your insurance card(s), a list of any medications you currently take, and your completed intake form. You can save time by filling out the intake form online before your visit — click the link in the bar at the top of this page.
No referral is required to see an optometrist. Optometrists are primary care providers for eye health and can be scheduled directly. Most vision and medical insurance plans allow you to schedule directly with a participating optometrist — call us at 480-515-2727 and we'll verify your benefits before your visit.
Both adults and children benefit from a comprehensive ocular health examination every year. Patients managing diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure, or a history of eye disease are especially important to be seen annually. Children should be seen at 6 months, age 3, before starting school, and every year after that — vision problems are a leading cause of learning difficulties and are often missed without a formal exam.
If you're in your 40s or older and find yourself holding your phone farther away to read, or removing your glasses to see close-up, you likely have presbyopia — the natural loss of near-focusing ability that affects virtually everyone with age. Progressive lenses (no-line bifocals) provide seamless distance, computer, and near vision in one lens. Your doctor will discuss the best lens option at your exam based on your prescription and visual lifestyle.
A routine vision exam focuses on determining and updating your corrective lens prescription. A medical eye exam evaluates the health of your eyes and manages conditions such as dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, infections, and inflammation. These are billed differently — routine exams typically go through vision insurance (VSP, EyeMed, etc.), while medical eye visits are billed through medical insurance (Aetna, Blue Cross, Medicare, etc.). Some visits include both components. We'll help you understand how your benefits apply.
Yes. We offer comprehensive dry eye evaluation and treatment in North Scottsdale. Our optometrists identify the root cause — whether evaporative, aqueous-deficient, or a combination — and build a personalized plan that may include prescription drops such as Restasis® or Xiidra®, punctal plugs, lid hygiene therapy, or omega-3 supplementation. Arizona's dry climate makes this one of the most common conditions we treat.
No — and for good reason. The FDA classifies contact lenses as medical devices, which means a contact lens evaluation is legally required and cannot be combined with a routine eye exam prescription. The fitting can be performed the same day as your eye exam and is billed as a separate service — a standard additional fee that every optometry practice charges. This annual evaluation determines the correct base curve, diameter, and lens-specific power for your cornea, and — critically — checks that your lenses are not causing subtle underlying changes such as corneal hypoxia or neovascularization that could result in permanent vision loss if undetected. Diagnostic trial lenses are available at your first fitting.
Our on-site optical lab grinds and finishes custom prescription lenses while you wait. For most standard prescriptions, your new glasses can be ready within one hour of selecting your frames — no shipping, no days-long wait, no returning for a second trip. Starting at $150, it's one of the most practical advantages of choosing an independent practice over a mail-order service. Some specialty lenses (high-index, progressive, coated) may take slightly longer.
Yes. We accommodate same-day or next-day urgent visits for red or painful eyes, sudden vision changes, foreign body or chemical exposure, eye infections, and new flashes or floaters. Please do not wait for your regular appointment for these symptoms — call us immediately at 480-515-2727. Sudden vision changes and new floaters with flashes are considered medical emergencies.
Absolutely. We provide thorough, gentle pediatric eye exams for children of all ages, with Clinical Letters of Excellence in Pediatric Optometry. The American Optometric Association recommends the first exam at 6 months of age — children don't need to know the alphabet for us to evaluate their vision. Early detection of amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus, and refractive errors can make a profound difference in a child's development, learning, and confidence.
We accept most major vision and medical plans including Aetna, Blue Cross / Blue Shield, Davis Vision, EyeMed, Medicare, Spectera, and VSP. Insurance benefits can be complex — call us at 480-515-2727 before your visit and we'll verify your specific coverage so there are no surprises at checkout.
