Dry Eye Treatment

Arizona's desert climate is one of the worst environments for dry eye. We diagnose the cause and treat it — not just the symptoms.

When Arizona's Climate
Meets Your Eyes

Arizona's arid desert climate — with an average humidity of under 25%, intense year-round UV, and frequent wind — accelerates tear film evaporation far beyond what most people experience in other states. Scottsdale's low rainfall and high heat make chronic dry eye one of the most common conditions we treat. Screen use, air conditioning, and certain medications compound the problem, making dry eye a near-universal complaint for North Scottsdale residents at some point.

Treatment starts with identifying which type of tear film deficiency you have.

From preservative-free tears to prescription drops, plugs, and lid hygiene therapy.

Relief for
Desert-Dry Eyes

Treatment is matched to the cause of your tear film deficiency — evaporative (the most common type, caused by meibomian gland dysfunction), aqueous-deficient, or mixed. Left untreated, chronic dry eye can damage the corneal surface over time and make contact lens wear increasingly uncomfortable or impossible.

Restasis® & Xiidra® Drops Prescription anti-inflammatory drops for moderate to severe cases.
Punctal Plugs A simple in-office procedure that slows tear drainage to keep your eyes lubricated longer.
Lid Hygiene Therapy Ongoing treatment for meibomian gland disease, plus omega-3 supplementation as an adjunct.

Understanding Your
Treatment Options

Dry eye disease has two main underlying types — aqueous-deficient, where the eye doesn't produce enough tears, and evaporative, where tears evaporate too fast because of an oil-layer problem in the meibomian glands (the most common cause). Since these have different root causes, effective treatment starts with correctly identifying which type — or combination — you have. Not every treatment below is available at every practice; during your evaluation, we'll tell you exactly which options apply to your case.

Offered In-Office
Warm Compresses & Eyelid Hygiene

For evaporative dry eye linked to meibomian gland dysfunction, warm compresses help loosen thickened oils blocking the glands. A moist warm compress is more effective than dry heat alone, since moisture helps the heat penetrate the eyelid more effectively.

Meibomian Gland Expression

A gentle, in-office procedure where a doctor manually clears blocked meibomian glands to restore healthy oil flow into the tear film. It's often paired with other treatments, since expression alone addresses the blockage but not necessarily the underlying inflammation.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Therapy

IPL uses pulses of light applied near the eyelids to reduce inflammation and improve meibomian gland function. Clinical trials — including research sponsored by the Mayo Clinic — have shown IPL improves tear film stability and reduces symptom scores, particularly when paired with gland expression in the same visit.

Radiofrequency (RF) Treatment

Similar in goal to IPL, radiofrequency uses controlled heat delivered through the skin around the eyes to help release blocked oils from the meibomian glands, supporting a healthier tear film without the use of light-based technology.

Offered In-Office
Punctal Plugs

Tiny devices inserted into the eye's natural tear drainage ducts to slow tear drainage and keep more moisture on the eye's surface. They work well for aqueous-deficient dry eye, but in evaporative dry eye with inflamed, low-quality tears, plugging drainage can trap irritating debris rather than provide relief — which is why an accurate diagnosis matters before treatment begins.

Offered In-Office
Prescription & Medicated Eye Drops

For dry eye driven by inflammation, prescription anti-inflammatory drops such as Restasis® and Xiidra® address the underlying cause rather than just lubricating the surface — giving your doctor more targeted options than artificial tears alone.

Eyelid Debridement

An in-office procedure to remove bacterial buildup and debris along the eyelid margin, often used for blepharitis-related dry eye. Clean, healthy eyelid margins support better meibomian gland function and reduce ongoing irritation.

Offered In-Office
Omega-3 Supplementation

Omega-3 fatty acids are commonly recommended to support tear film quality. The evidence is mixed — several trials show improvement in tear break-up time, while one large NIH-funded trial found no significant difference versus placebo — so we view it as a supporting measure alongside other treatment, not a standalone fix.

Because dry eye is a multifactorial condition — and a treatment that helps one type can worsen another — we start every visit with a proper evaluation of what's actually driving your symptoms. At Visions Optique & Eyecare, your plan may draw from warm compress and lid hygiene therapy, punctal plugs, prescription anti-inflammatory drops, and omega-3 support, matched to your specific diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. We offer a full range of dry eye therapies — from preservative-free artificial tears and prescription drops to punctal plugs and lid hygiene treatments. We'll evaluate the underlying cause and create a treatment plan accordingly.

Arizona's arid desert climate, low humidity, high altitude, and intense sun accelerate tear evaporation year-round. Scottsdale averages under 8 inches of rainfall annually. The combination of dry air, UV exposure, wind, and air conditioning makes chronic dry eye particularly prevalent among residents.

Burning, stinging, grittiness, blurred vision that fluctuates when blinking, redness, sensitivity to wind or smoke, and paradoxically — excessive watering. If over-the-counter drops aren't helping after a few weeks, a dry eye evaluation is the right next step.

No — punctal plugs work well for tear-deficient dry eye, but can worsen symptoms in evaporative dry eye with inflamed tears. An accurate diagnosis of your dry eye type is the first step before choosing treatment.

The evidence is mixed. Several clinical trials show improvement in tear film quality, though one large NIH-funded study found no significant difference versus placebo. We generally recommend omega-3s as a supporting measure alongside other treatment, not a standalone fix.
