Glaucoma: The Silent
Thief of Sight

Glaucoma has no early symptoms. No pain, no blurred vision, no warning. By the time a patient first notices vision loss, up to 40% of their optic nerve fibers may already be permanently destroyed — and that damage cannot be reversed.

Pressure That
Damages the Nerve

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve — the critical cable of fibers transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain. In most cases, the damage is caused by elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). When the eye's drainage channels become less efficient, fluid pressure builds and slowly compresses the optic nerve fibers. The damage is permanent and irreversible, which is why early detection is everything.

Open-Angle Glaucoma About 90% of cases — develops slowly and silently, peripheral vision affected first.
Angle-Closure Glaucoma Less common but can be acute and sudden — a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.
Normal-Tension Glaucoma Optic nerve damage despite normal IOP, suggesting vascular or structural vulnerability.

Risk & Early Detection

Adults over age 60; African Americans (significantly higher risk beginning at age 40); family history of glaucoma in a first-degree relative; elevated intraocular pressure; high myopia (nearsightedness); prior eye injury or eye surgery; and long-term use of corticosteroid medications.

Open-angle glaucoma cannot be detected without an eye exam — there are simply no reliable symptoms in the early stages. Tonometry (IOP measurement), digital optic nerve imaging, and visual field testing are the tools that catch it early. Caught before significant damage, progression is highly controllable with prescription eye drops, laser treatment, or surgery. Caught late, vision cannot be recovered.

Annual comprehensive exams with IOP measurement are the single most important protection you have against this disease. Learn more about our approach to glaucoma diagnosis and management.
