Digital eye strain, also called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), is discomfort and fatigue caused by prolonged use of computers, smartphones, tablets, and televisions. Blue light is high-energy visible (HEV) light emitted by digital screens, LED bulbs, and the sun. While direct retinal damage from screen-level blue light exposure is not yet clinically proven, blue light's effect on sleep is well-established: it suppresses melatonin production, the hormone that signals your body to sleep. Evening screen use delays sleep onset and reduces sleep quality — and chronic sleep disruption amplifies every symptom of eye strain.

The simplest, most effective tool for digital eye strain: every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This lets the ciliary muscles — the small muscles inside your eye that control focus — fully relax. Set a timer if you need the reminder. The habit alone can significantly reduce end-of-day fatigue.
Additional relief strategies: position your monitor at arm's length and slightly below eye level; reduce overhead glare with a matte screen protector; increase font size and contrast; and use preservative-free lubricating drops to replenish moisture lost through reduced blinking.
