4 Reasons You May Have Itchy Eyes
Allergies
The most common cause of itchy eyes is seasonal allergies. You may be allergic to ragweed or another flowering plant that releases pollen. Allergic symptoms, like itchy eyes, are caused by histamine, which is a compound that is released by your cells to defend against allergens. Many over-the-counter medications can help relieve allergies, but if it’s especially serious, you can talk with your doctor about prescription allergy medication.
Eye Infection
Eyes are vulnerable! Your itchy eyes may be caused by an infection, the most common of which is pink eye, or conjunctivitis. Pink eye is exactly what it sounds like — an infected eye (or eyes) in which the white part turns pink. Pink eye is very contagious, and if you think that this may be the cause of your itchy eyes, contact your doctor.
Dry Eyes
Your eyes need to stay moist to function properly, which is why we blink so often! Sometimes, though, your eyes may not produce enough tears to keep your eyes hydrated — and this is especially common as people get older. Some medications can also cause dry eyes.
Poor Contact Care
If you wear contacts, your itchy eyes may be caused by poor contact care. You should never wear your contacts past the time they are designed to be worn, and you also need to clean them properly. If not, you could be irritating your eyes.
